Today in 1966: Surveyor 1 made a soft landing on the Moon, becoming the first U.S. spacecraft to do so. The Surveyor series was designed to carry out soft landings on the Moon and provide data about its surface and possible atmosphere. The artifact pictured here is an engineering model used for thermal control tests

Venera 7 was the first spacecraft to land on surface of Venus and the first to transmit data after landing on another planet. It was launched on this day in 1970 by the Soviet Union

Today in 1960: USAF Capt. Joseph W. Kittinger stepped from a balloon-supported gondola at the altitude of 31,333 meters (102,800 ft). In free fall for 4 minutes and 36 seconds at speeds up to 614 mph, he opened his parachute at 5,334 meters (17,500 ft).

Today in 2006: Pluto was reclassified as a "dwarf planet" when the International Astronomical Union passed a resolution redefining criteria for planetary status. The New Horizons spacecraft flew by Pluto just over two years ago, and its instruments captured the four images and data used to make this global view.
