A MiG-21 Bison equipped with an Elta EL/L-8222 self-protection jamming pod coming in for landing during Exercise Cope India '06.
The Elta EL/L-8222 pod is an Electronic Warfare (EW) system intended for fighter aircrafts self-protection, it is designed to enhance survivability of fighters by suppressing multiple threats in dense radar-guided weapon systems environment. It was designed as a bolt-on system for fighters without internal jammers and can be easily integrated onto a large number of aircrafts.
It has a Digital Radio Frequency Memory (DRFM) based jammer which provides High Radio Frequency (RF) sensitivity, High Effective Radiated Power (ERP) and wide technique repertoire. The jammer has an autonomous threat environment handling using an integrated ESM receiver. Interception, analysis, identification, sorting and initiation of appropriate jamming techniques is done automatically.
The pod is lightweight at 100 kg and has a length of 2.4 metres. It is low drag and is certified to operate in full aircraft flight envelopes. With the IAF the pod has been integrated onto the MiG-21 Bison and Su-30MKI. The Indian Navy also has these pods aboard their MiG-29K and before them the Sea Harrier FRS Mk.51.
